Faculty members, support staff and students of the Institute of Language and Culture Studies (ILCS) took part in the election of student counsellors on June 10.
With support from District Election Office of Trongsa, the election was conducted successfully using electronic voting machine (EVM). The dzongkhag election officials briefed the students and teachers on voting procedures before the election.
“It is a good opportunity for all of us to exercise our fundamental right to choose the right person to lead us,” said Encho Lhamo, a first year student.
Twenty-two candidates from two classes of second year contested in the election out of which 10 candidates, including president and vice president, were elected based on the highest numbers of votes secured.
Choney Gyamtsho, a second year student of BA Language and Literature ‘A’, secured highest (132 votes) and was elected as the president. Ugyen Zangmo of BLL B secured 88 votes and was elected vice president.
Kinley Penjor of BLL B, Sangay Tshering of BLL A, Kinley Dorji of BLL B and Jigme Tharchen of BLL B year were elected men’s counsellors while Tsulthrim Zangmo of BLL B, Rinzin Wangmo of BLL A, Tshering Yangden of BLL A and Soma Choden BLL B were elected women’s counsellors for the upcoming academic session. PhubDorji of BLL B was appointed sports custodian and Thinley Dorji was appointed prayer in-charge.
Student counsellors are the representatives of the student body and they play a vital role in the smooth functioning of all activities in the college.
The election result was officially announced on June 11. A miniature ceremony was held where the elected counsellors were awarded Tashi khaddar by the deans and senior lecturers of the institute.
